Cod, torsk, is an important fish species in Norway’s coastal ecosystem. Besides its ecological relevance, it is also of high cultural and economic importance. Recently, it has become harder to find these precious species in our sea, and the latest scientific reports evidence the dramatic situation of this emblematic species along our coast. But, where is the missing cod?
In this project, I had the opportunity to take part in an ongoing research project focused on finding the spawning locations of cod in two of our western fjords in Agder. After collecting eggs and larvae in the field, I performed the genetic analyses in the laboratory. Being involved in the lab work gave me valuable hands-on experience with molecular techniques. I learned how to handle the genetic material with care and precision, and the process helped me understand how fieldwork experience and DNA analyses in the lab are used to study marine species dynamics. It also made me more confident working in a lab setting and gave me a better understanding of how research is done in practice. I found the work both challenging and rewarding, and it’s something I’m proud to have been part of. Being part of a real research team was a valuable step in my academic journey at UiA. This experience has strengthened my interest in marine science and motivated me to continue developing my skills in this area.
